# Managing Tags

> Create, update, and delete tags to categorize and organize sources, validators, and other resources in Validio.

Tags are key and value pairs that you can use throughout the platform to categorize and organize resources such as sources and validators. Validio automatically imports external tags, and you can view both Validio-specific tags as well as existing external tags on your sources and catalog assets.

You can also use tags to define alert and routing conditions when you configure notification rules. For more information, see [Notification Rules](https://docs.validio.io/v11.0/docs/notifications/notification-rules.md).

You can manage (create, update, and delete) all tags on the platform in the Workspace settings page. You can also create, add, and remove tags on specific resources, such as sources and validators, in their respective details pages and panels.

> The only way to permanently remove a tag from the platform is to delete them in the Workspace settings page.

## Create a new tag

To create a new tag in the Workspace settings page,

1. Navigate to **Workspaces > Tags** to display the tags configured in your system.
2. Click **+ New tag**.
3. In the **New tag** dialog, choose the type of tag, which can be **Label** or **Custom**.
   1. For **Label** tags, enter a **Value**. (Label is the key.)
   2. For **Custom** tags, enter a **Key** and **Value**.
4. Click **Create**.

You can also create tags when you add a new tag directly for a resource, such as a specific source or validator. For more information, see [Manage tags on specific resources](#manage-tags-on-specific-resources).

## Update a tag

To update a tag in the Workspace Settings page,

1. Navigate to **Workspaces > Tags** to display the tags configured in your system.
2. In the row for the tag, click the ⋮ menu and select **Update**.
3. Edit the tag’s type, key, or value.
4. Click **Update** to apply your changes.

## Delete a tag

Deleting a tag removes it permanently from the platform.

To delete a tag in the Workspace settings page,

1. Navigate to **Workspaces > Tags** to display the tags configured in your system.
2. In the row for the tag, click the ⋮ menu and select **Delete**.
3. Confirm the deletion.

## Manage tags on specific resources

You can create, add, and remove tags on the pages for specific resources, such as sources and validators. This allows you to enrich the metadata for your validators, as well as filter incidents by source and validator tags.

On the Sources or Validator details pages, the tables of sources and validators display the tags in a column. When there are multiple tags on a resource, the table displays the count, and you can click the count to see the list of tags.

Catalog assets can have tags that were added outside of Validio. If a source is connected to catalog assets with external tags, these tags will also be listed. When you view the edit menu for source and catalog assets, external tags will always be applied and you cannot edit them.

To manage tags for a specific resource,

1. Navigate to the resource’s page.
2. Search or filter to find the specific source or validator in the table.
3. In the **Tags** column for the specific source or validator,
   1. If there are no tags on the resource, click **+ Add**.
   2. If a tag exists on the resource, click the edit icon.
4. In the tags editing menu, you can do the following:
   1. Select from existing tags to add to the resource and click **Apply**.
   2. Deselect applied tags to remove them from the resource and click **Apply**.
   3. Filter for existing tags by typing the `value` or `key:value` pair.
   4. If the tag doesn’t exist, automatically create a new tag by clicking **Create new +**.
