# Sigma

> Sigma is a BI analytics tool built for your cloud data warehouse.

The Sigma integration for Validio is a credential configuration to fetch catalog and lineage information about your Sigma workbooks, datasets, and data models, and display it in Validio Data Catalog and Data Lineage. The integration does not perform any updates or edits to Sigma.

## Prerequisites for integrating with Sigma

To connect Validio with your Sigma instance,

* Create a Sigma `Admin` account for the Validio user. This account type is required to fetch lineage relations of datasets, data models, and workbooks.
* In your Sigma Administration page, generate and store a Client ID and Client Secret (API token). These credentials should be associated with your `Admin` Validio user account in Sigma. For more information, refer to [Generate Client Credentials](https://help.sigmacomputing.com/reference/generate-client-credentials) in Sigma documentation.
* Assign the required permissions:
  * (Required) Assign the Validio API user (that is the user associated with the API token) `Can view` or `Can explore` access to all the workspaces that include the resources such as datasets, data models, and workbooks you need to monitor. Validio will only discover resources that the API user has direct access to via assigned workspaces. For help with assigning permissions, see [Setting up Sigma for Validio](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/integrations/business-intelligence-tools/sigma/setting-up-sigma-for-validio.md).
  * (Recommended) Disable `Write access` for Connections on this account. You can find this setting in your Sigma Administration page > Connections > Write Access.

## Add a Sigma credential

To add a Sigma credential in Validio,

1. Navigate to **Credentials**, and click **+ New credential**.
2. Under **Namespace**, select a namespace to define where resources will be created and who can access it.
3. Under **Credential Type**, select **Sigma**.
4. Fill in the **Configuration** parameters for the credential. For more information, see [Sigma Credential Parameters](#sigma-credential-parameters).
5. (Optional) Click **Test credential** to validate that Validio can successfully access the Sigma account. If validation fails, check that you provided the correct parameter values.
6. Click **Create credential**.

Validio automatically starts fetching data. BI tool credentials are always enabled for catalog, so there is no catalog option to configure. You can view Sigma assets and their relationships on the [Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/catalog.md) and [Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/lineage.md) pages.

### Sigma credential parameters

| Field | Description |
| :- | :- |
| Name | The display name of your credential. |
| Base URL | The base URL for the Sigma API server. |
| Client ID | The client ID of your Sigma credentials. |
| Client secret | The client secret of your Sigma credentials. |

## View Sigma assets in Catalog and Lineage

Validio adds the discovered Sigma assets to [Data Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/catalog.md) and [Data Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/lineage.md).

To find your Sigma assets, navigate to **Catalog > Assets** and apply the **Type** filter for the Sigma asset types:

* **Sigma Workbook**
* **Sigma Dataset**
* **Sigma Data Model**

Click an asset row to open the information sidebar, or click the asset name to open the asset details page. To open the lineage graph anchored on that asset, click **View asset lineage** in the sidebar.

> Validio BI tool integrations are only credentials, and you cannot use them to create sources or convert their assets to sources.

For more information, see [Catalog Assets](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/catalog/catalog-assets.md) and [Using Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/lineage/using-lineage.md).

## Browser extension support

If you have the [Validio Browser Extension](https://docs.validio.io/v10.1/docs/integrations/browser-extension.md) installed, you can easily access data quality and lineage information directly from your Sigma workflow. The extension will automatically detect when you are in a Sigma dashboard or asset view and provide a link to the corresponding entry in Validio's Data Catalog page.
