# Power BI

> Integrate Validio with Power BI to track metadata and lineage for your reports, semantic models, and dataflows.

The Power BI integration lets Validio track metadata and lineage for your Power BI reports, semantic models, and dataflows. Power BI is a platform for unified, scalable self-service and enterprise business intelligence (BI).

## Prerequisites for integrating with Power BI

To connect Validio to your Power BI instance,

1. Register a Microsoft Entra application for Validio. You will need the Application (client) ID, client secret key, and Directory (tenant) ID from this application. This application is the service account you will reference to create a PowerBI credential in Validio. For more information, refer to [Microsoft documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/embedded/embed-service-principal).
2. Create a Microsoft Entra security group and add your registered application as a member.
3. In your Power BI Admin portal, ensure that you have permissions to access and read data from the relevant workspaces. You should have the following settings:
   * In Tenant settings, enable “Service principals can use Fabric APIs” and apply it to the relevant security groups.
   * In Workspaces, add the Microsoft Entra application as a Member to the relevant workspace.

## Add a Power BI credential

To add a Power BI credential in Validio,

1. Navigate to **Credentials**, and click **+ New credential**.
2. Under **Namespace**, select a namespace to define where resources will be created and who can access it.
3. Under **Credential Type**, select **Power BI**.
4. Fill in the **Configuration** parameters for the credential. For more information, see [Power BI Credential Parameters](#power-bi-credential-parameters).
5. (Optional) Click **Test credential** to validate that Validio can successfully access the Power BI account. If validation fails, check that you provided the correct parameter values.
6. Click **Create credential**.

Validio automatically starts fetching data. BI tool credentials are always enabled for catalog, so there is no catalog option to configure. You can view Power BI assets and their relationships on the [Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog.md) and [Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage.md) pages.

### Power BI credential parameters

| Field | Description |
| :- | :- |
| Name | The identifier used to reference the credential within Validio. |
| Client ID | The client ID of your Azure registered application. |
| Client secret | The client secret of your Azure registered application. |
| Tenant ID | The tenant ID of your Azure registered application. |

## View Power BI assets in Catalog and Lineage

Validio adds the discovered Power BI assets to [Data Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog.md) and [Data Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage.md).

To find your Power BI assets, navigate to **Catalog > Assets** and apply the **Type** filter for the Power BI asset types:

* **PowerBI Report**
* **PowerBI Semantic Model**
* **PowerBI Dataflow**

Click an asset row to open the information sidebar, or click the asset name to open the asset details page. To open the lineage graph anchored on that asset, click **View asset lineage** in the sidebar.

> [!NOTE]

> **BI Tool Assets and Sources**
>
> Validio BI tool integrations are only credentials, and you cannot use them to create sources or convert their assets to sources.

For more information, see [Catalog Assets](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog/catalog-assets.md) and [Using Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage/using-lineage.md).

## Browser extension support

If you have the [Validio Browser Extension](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/integrations/browser-extension.md) installed, you can easily access data quality and lineage information directly from your Power BI workflow. The extension will automatically detect when you are in a Power BI dashboard or asset view and provide a link to the corresponding entry in Validio's Data Catalog page.
