# Looker

> Integrate Validio with Looker to track metadata and lineage for dashboards and looks.

Looker helps you to explore and visualize your company’s data. Integrate Validio with Looker to track metadata and lineage for your dashboards and looks.

## Prerequisites for integrating with Looker

* A user account in Looker with the Admin permission set. The admin role allows Validio to automatically generate lineage relationships between Looker and any connected data warehouse tables. For more information about creating this account, see [Adding Users](https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/admin-panel-users-users#adding_users) and [Default Permission Sets](https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/admin-panel-users-roles#default_permission_sets) in Looker documentation.
* An API key for the user account. You can generate a new API key from the Users page in Looker. This produces the client ID and client secret that you need to configure a Looker Credential in Validio. For more information, see [API Keys](https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/admin-panel-users-users#api_keys) in Looker documentation.

## Add a Looker credential

To add a Looker credential in Validio,

1. Navigate to **Credentials**, and click **+ New credential**.
2. Under **Namespace**, select a namespace to define where resources will be created and who can access it.
3. Under **Credential Type**, select **Looker**.
4. Fill in the **Configuration** parameters for the credential. For more information, see [Looker Credential Parameters](#looker-credential-parameters).
5. (Optional) Click **Test credential** to validate that Validio can successfully access the Looker account. If validation fails, check that you provided the correct parameter values.
6. Click **Create credential**.

Validio automatically starts fetching data. BI tool credentials are always enabled for catalog, so there is no catalog option to configure. You can view Looker assets and their relationships on the [Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog.md) and [Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage.md) pages.

### Looker credential parameters

| Field | Description |
| :- | :- |
| Name | The identifier used to reference the credential within Validio. |
| Base URL | The URL to the Looker instance. The default API path uses the following format: `https://<instance_name>.cloud.looker.com:<port>`. For more information, see [Getting Started with the Looker API](https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/api-getting-started#looker_api_path_and_port) in Looker documentation. |
| Client ID | The Looker API client ID. |
| Client secret | The Looker API client secret. |

## View Looker assets in Catalog and Lineage

Validio adds the discovered Looker assets to [Data Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog.md) and [Data Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage.md).

To find your Looker assets, navigate to **Catalog > Assets** and apply the **Type** filter for the Looker asset types:

* **Looker Dashboard**
* **Looker Look**

Click an asset row to open the information sidebar, or click the asset name to open the asset details page. To open the lineage graph anchored on that asset, click **View asset lineage** in the sidebar.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **BI Tool Assets and Sources**
>
> Validio BI tool integrations are only credentials, and you cannot use them to create sources or convert their assets to sources.

For more information, see [Catalog Assets](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/catalog/catalog-assets.md) and [Using Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/lineage/using-lineage.md).

## Browser extension support

If you have the [Validio Browser Extension](https://docs.validio.io/v10.0/docs/integrations/browser-extension.md) installed, you can easily access data quality and lineage information directly from your Looker workflow. The extension will automatically detect when you are in a Looker dashboard or asset view and provide a link to the corresponding entry in Validio's Data Catalog page.
