# Tableau

> Integrate Validio with Tableau to track metadata and lineage for worksheets, workbooks, datasources, and dashboards.

Tableau is a Business Intelligence tool that provides rich visualization capabilities. Integrate Validio with Tableau to track metadata and lineage for your worksheets, workbooks, datasources, dashboards, custom SQL tables, and flows.

Validio supports integrating with both Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server.

## Prerequisites for integrating with Tableau

### Authentication methods

Validio supports the following authentication options to integrate with Tableau:

* **(Recommended) Connected App with Direct Trust in Tableau**--Creating and registering a Connected App in Tableau requires a Tableau user with admin permissions. For more information, see [Tableau Connected Apps documentation](https://help.tableau.com/current/online/en-gb/connected_apps_direct.htm).
* **Personal Access Token (PAT)**--When you create the PAT in Tableau, make sure to copy the token value because it will only be shown once. For more information, see [Tableau Personal Access Tokens documentation](https://help.tableau.com/current/server/en-us/security_personal_access_tokens.htm).

### Admin permissions

For both Connected App and PAT authentication methods, you need to configure the user account with the permissions to query information about all external assets in the site. Depending on your installation of Tableau, this requires the 'Tableau Server Admin' or 'Tableau Cloud site admin' role.

For more information, see [Query Tables Permissions](https://help.tableau.com/current/api/rest_api/en-us/REST/rest_api_ref_metadata.htm#query_tables) in the Tableau API Reference.

### Site ID

The site ID parameter is optional when using Tableau Server, and needs to be specified when using Tableau Cloud.

## Add a Tableau credential

To add a Tableau credential,

1. Navigate to **Credentials** and click **+ New credential**.
2. Under **Namespace**, select a namespace to define where resources will be created and who can access it.
3. Under **Credential Type**, select the relevant Tableau credentials: (Recommended) **Tableau Connected App** or **Tableau Personal Access Token**.
4. Fill in the **Configuration** parameters for the Tableau credential type. For more information, see [Connected App Credential Parameters](#connected-app-credential-parameters) or [Personal Access Token Credential Parameters](#personal-access-token-credential-parameters).
5. (Optional) Click **Test credential** to validate that Validio can successfully access the Tableau account. If validation fails, check that you provided the correct parameter values.
6. Click **Create credential**.

   Validio automatically starts fetching data. BI tool credentials are always enabled for catalog, so there is no catalog option to configure. You can view Tableau assets and their relationships on the [Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/docs/catalog.md) and [Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/docs/lineage.md) pages.

### Connected App credential parameters

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Credential Scope**
>
> This credential provides Validio with the `tableau::content::read` scope to have read access to Tableau.

| Field | Description |
| :- | :- |
| Credential Type | Tableau Connected App |
| Name | Identifier used to reference the credential within Validio. |
| Host | The domain of your Tableau server. For example, `<instance_name>.online.tableau.com` |
| Site | (Optional) The name of your Tableau site. The site ID is optional when using Tableau Server, but needs to be specified when using Tableau Cloud. |
| User | The username of an authenticated Tableau user on your server. |
| Client ID | The Client ID of your Tableau Connected Apps configuration. |
| Secret ID | The Secret ID of your Tableau Connected Apps configuration. |
| Secret value | The Secret Value of your Tableau Connected Apps configuration. |

### Personal Access Token credential parameters

| Field | Description |
| :- | :- |
| Credential Type | Tableau Personal Access Token |
| Name | Identifier used to reference the credential within Validio. |
| Host | The domain for your Tableau server. `<instance_name>.online.tableau.com` |
| Site | (Optional) The name of your Tableau site. The site ID is optional when using Tableau Server, but needs to be specified when using Tableau Cloud. |
| Token name | The name of the Tableau personal access token. |
| Token value | The value of the Tableau personal access token. |

## View Tableau assets in Catalog and Lineage

Validio adds the discovered Tableau assets to [Data Catalog](https://docs.validio.io/docs/catalog.md) and [Data Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/docs/lineage.md).

To find your Tableau assets, navigate to **Catalog > Assets** and apply the **Type** filter for the Tableau asset types:

* **Tableau Dashboard**
* **Tableau Workbook**
* **Tableau Worksheet**
* **Tableau Datasource**
* **Tableau Custom SQL Table**
* **Tableau Flow**

Click an asset row to open the information sidebar, or click the asset name to open the asset details page. To open the lineage graph anchored on that asset, click **View asset lineage** in the sidebar.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **BI Tool Assets and Sources**
>
> Validio BI tool integrations are only credentials, and you cannot use them to create sources or convert their assets to sources.

For more information, see [Catalog Assets](https://docs.validio.io/docs/catalog/catalog-assets.md) and [Using Lineage](https://docs.validio.io/docs/lineage/using-lineage.md).

## Browser extension support

If you have the [Validio Browser Extension](https://docs.validio.io/docs/integrations/browser-extension.md) installed, you can easily access data quality and lineage information directly from your Tableau workflow. The extension will automatically detect when you are in a Tableau dashboard or asset view and provide a link to the corresponding entry in Validio's Data Catalog page.
